A small percentage of next year's firewood seasoning amidst organically
managed farmland in the stunning Scottish Lowlands.
We stack it as you see above and leave it exposed
to the elements until we decide it is ready to burn, this can take
from two years though to six years depending on the type of wood.
Once we are happy with the seasoning we cut it to
length, split it and store it outside again but this time in large
nets. The split logs are then left for a further year or so, again
depending on the species of wood.
The third stage is to bring the nets inside for another
couple of months to finish off their seasoning.
At the final stage we hand-pack the Hessian Sacks
with the wood of your choice to reach you in perfect condition.
Firewood only dries from March through to September
We cut all our logs to a standard ten inch length;
over time we have found that this will fit most open fires, woodburners,
chimineas and firepits.
The logs are split into fairly small pieces, between
two and a half inches through to three and a quarter inches. We believe
that this is the best size for the logs to give the most heat output.
Bigger in this case, is definitely not better!
If you have huge pieces of wood, instead of the logs burning and
giving off good heat all their energy goes into igniting the wood
and by the time the log has really got going most of the heat has
gone up the chimney!
If you do not have enough indoor space to store our
logs, don’t panic! our wood can quite happily be stored outside,
because the wood is already seasoned, the cells have closed up and
although the wood may be wet to the touch it does not affect its’ burning
properties. However, if you do stand the logs in a puddle, over time,
they will absorb the water – but all you have to do is lift
them out of the water, let the air blow through them for a couple
of weeks and they are ready for burning again.
The trees, which we use for firewood, are a by-product
of a silvercultural thinning programme.
In order to produce furniture quality hardwood, weak and damaged
trees are cut down to let the better quality trees grow and develop.
For every hardwood tree cut down, three more are planted!
We only buy our firewood from:
Buccleuch and Queensbury Estate;
Scottish Woodlands and
Lowther Forestry Group
These are all well managed sources and we can identify where every
single tree has come from, in this way we are able to be sure of
its’ origins.
